Digitalization Revolution

When we discuss “algorithmic”, not stand on algorithm per se, it’s the insertion of procedure into human knowledge and social experience.

“ What makes something algorithmic is that it is produced by or related to an information system that is committed (functionally and ideologically) to the computational generation of knowledge or decision.”

Tarleton Gillespie refers different terms of the algorithm and explains how the algorithm works depending on the particular “environment” in which it is used.

Algorithm as a technical solution to a technical problem; Algorithm as synecdoche; Algorithm as talisman; Algorithm as committed to procedural

‘Algorithm’ came after ‘model’, it gathering abundance of data and operate in the specific functions, then gives certain results. Unfortunately, during the process, some training data which should be in it, may been treated as irrelevant.

If we said algorithm’s social implication, the early social decisions has much bracketed with algorithm: how to operationalize, a social activity into model and into the miniscule, mathematical moments of assigning scores and tuning threshold.

Algorithm seems to have a “ disposition towards objectivity”.

“Algorithmic” step-by-step takes part in procedures of gathering data, calculating satisfied results.

bellowing reference is from Bunz, Mercedes. “When Algorithms Learned How to Write.” In The Silent Revolution,

As the sports reports writing algorithm Stats Monky came out, it represented that algorithm can not only calculation, process information, but also can write. It’s the digitalization revolution assists human knowledge impacting middle class which can be analog with “Spinning Jenny” which started industrial revolution automated human work impacting working class.

Such automatically generated reports gives local media chances to expand coverage, context with more ads for readers and frees reporters to focus on more sophisticated analysis and features. But journalists didn’t feel relieved rather than were afraid algorithm would replace them. (“Our concern for the politics of algorithms is an extension of worries about Taylorism and the automation of industrial labor” by Tarleton Gillespie)

Stats Monky event is just a start, digitalization will impacts all walks of life. This also means that disrupting the expert and automation of information to next step.

What digitalization means for human? (How we treat algorithm?)

Algorithm wraps the field of knowledge and fuels the historical event of digitalization. Algorithm classifies and compiles information, and it is also be educated/experienced enough to enter the new step (“ In order to learn how to ‘write’, algorithm starts to ‘know’ 1).Algorithm reorganizes knowledge, shifts the tool with which we think.

As we know that how algorithm implementing(the logic of digitalization driven by people’s usage), knowledge is now voted upon. In an ideal state, the confirmation of fact is proved by plurality, which in different perspectives and aline with plurality expert opinions. Plurality enters to the field of knowledge, the principle of organizes knowledge. The truth is haunted by plurality. This also can be interpreted that algorithm maybe makes more democratic, it’s more subjective. As Tarleton Gillespie reminds that we may wish more algorithmic inventions in discriminatory, nepotistic, and fraught with error.
